Angus Beef
The Takapoto Angus herd was established in 2011 with the purchase of a line of registered Te Mania Angus heifers. This foundation was strengthened in 2012 with additional heifers from Te Mania, Kakahu and Mount Linton Angus studs. From this base we now aim to calve around 200 cows on the Estate each year.
Our breeding programme is guided by multi trait selection with a commitment to performing above the breed average across all traits. Carcass quality and growth rates are central to our goals, alongside fertility, calving ease and temperament. The cows we retain are moderate framed, docile and structurally sound, with strong feet and proven maternal ability. Each rear a calf at two years of age and continue to do so every year thereafter.
In 2015 and 2016 Takapoto Angus gained national recognition, winning the title of Supreme Brand Champion at the prestigious Steak of Origin competition, New Zealand’s premier beef carcass awards. This achievement reflects our ongoing dedication to excellence. Our focus remains on enhancing the quality of our herd while continuing to build on a strong maternal base.
Biological Farming
At Takapoto Estate we believe that healthy soils are the foundation of healthy stock. By nurturing the land, we grow robust pastures that in turn support well fed, thriving animals.
We follow the principles of biological farming, using natural fertilisers, soil conditioners and minerals to enrich our soils. Multi species pastures provide resilience, while deferred grazing allows paddocks to rest and reseed. Over time this approach increases organic matter, improves water retention and strengthens biodiversity.
Our philosophy extends to animal health, with minimal drenching of young stock and none at all for adult cattle. The result is a natural system that promotes the wellbeing of both the land and the animals it sustains.
