OUR ANGUS BULLS

Award Winning Genetics

The Takapoto Angus herd was established in 2011 with the purchase of a top line of registered Te Mania Angus heifers, this was further added to in 2012 with heifers from Te Mania, Kakahu and Mount Linton Angus studs. From this base, we now have 145 registered and 55 commercial Angus cows.

Our breeding program at Takapoto Angus centres on multi trait selection, with an aim to be above breed average on all recorded traits, with an emphasis on carcase quality and growth rates. Of equal importance however is fertility, calving ease, and temperament. Our cows are moderate framed, docile, and structurally sound with excellent feet. They must rear a calf as a two-year-old, and every year thereafter to be retained in the herd.

Takapoto Angus is now part of AngusPro, a group of progressive New Zealand based Angus stud breeders who have shifted their animal recording to Angus Australia. Angus Australia prides themselves on their quality of leadership in the delivery of innovative programs that will enhance and promote the value of Angus cattle and beef. This is a very positive step that will greatly enhance both our own and our clients’ herds.

We sell all our bulls as yearlings in our on-farm spring sale, so clients can be assured they are always getting the full crop to select from. While most of our bulls are suited to mating with heifers, we also breed a limited number of bulls suited to mature cows. Our bulls are now happily servicing beef and dairy cattle from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island.

Quality Assurance

The Takapoto Angus breeding program achieved significant recognition in 2015 and 2016 by winning the “Supreme Brand Champion” in the prestigious “Steak of Origin”, New Zealand’s premiere beef carcass competition.

Our ultimate goal is to continue building the quality of our cow herd while consolidating on our strong maternal base. To aid in this we use Embryo Transfer technology to increase the production from our top performing cows, and Artificial Insemination to give us access to top genetics from around the globe.

All our registered animals are now HD50K DNA tested to provide verified parentage and genomically enhanced Estimated Breeding Values, and all our bulls are guaranteed for fertility and structural soundness.

Biological Farming

At Takapoto Estate we take a holistic approach to our management and believe the soil is the foundation of our success: healthy soils produce an abundance of healthy plants which means we always have healthy, well fed and content animals.

To achieve this, we use biological farming principles, with the use of natural fertilisers, soil conditioners and minerals. We also use multi species pastures for resilience and grow multi species forage crops.

Our animal health policy also reflects this philosophy, with minimal drenching of young stock, and no drenching of adult stock.
